EVIDENCE THAT J.J. HAS A CRUSH ON ME

1. Keeps helping me without my asking for it

2. Always looks at me in class, and when I catch her she makes a face

3. Helped herself to my dessert at lunch without asking, twice

4. Is excited to meet my parents

5. Asks a lot of nosy questions about my family life

6. Keeps touching me—put arm in mine, also shoved me in the back and stepped on my foot “by accident”

“Hi, Mitch,” my mom said, walking up to us. “Is this one of your school friends?”

“Yes,” I said, but before I could continue J.J. had already thrust her hand out.

“Hello, Mrs. Mathis,” she chirped. “I’m J.J. Schwartz, Jeremy Schwartz’s daughter. It really is a pleasure to meet you.”

“Nice to meet you too, J.J.,” my mom said, and before she finished what she was going to say, J.J. had already turned to my dad.

“Hello, Mr. Mathis,” J.J. continued. “I just loved your presentation in our classroom. Remember? The one about the cockroaches.”

“Why, thank you,” my dad said, surprised. I groaned silently. I’d hoped that was behind me by now, but J.J. just kept on going. She must really like me a lot, because she was sure trying to impress me by kissing up to my dad. While she was yakking away I took the opportunity to take a good look at her. Her ponytail bobbed up and down when she spoke, and she had a splatter of freckles on her nose and a way of raising one eyebrow whenever she didn’t agree with what was going on. And she was smart, probably the smartest girl in the class. When she wasn’t busy showing off, she could be kind of funny. I guess when it came down to it, she wasn’t such a bad person to have adoring you.

“I’ll see you later, Mitch,” J.J. was saying. She had finished gushing over my parents and gave me a quick squeeze on the arm. Touching me, again!

“Yeah, I’ll see you at school,” I said with a wave.

“Well! She seemed nice,” my dad said after she left.

“She’s a lot like her father,” my mom pointed out, in between bites of honeyed cake. “So, you think you’re ready to go, Mitch?”

I looked at my watch. We’d only been there for an hour and a half. I was about to protest, but then I realized I was ready to go. Now that J.J. was gone I couldn’t see anyone else I wanted to talk to. There was still a lot of great stuff going on, and a lot of interesting things to look at, but you have to be real careful about standing around by yourself at a party; it doesn’t look good. It’s a clear sign that you are a big loser. Hanging out with your parents is also a no-no. I definitely wasn’t going to go back to Brandon’s room, I didn’t want to wait out the line for the camel, I’d eaten, and I’d even schmoozed … a little. It was time to go.
